In our member spotlight, RonaMay Chilton takes time out of her busy day to chat with SMPS. RonaMay, who works for Michael Baker International as their Business Development Associate, shares the rewards of her job and the benefits of being an SMPS member.

Q: How did you find your way to the AEC industry and your current firm?
A: I was hired as a front desk assistant at Michael Baker 10 years ago. Since then, I had moved into other roles: Environmental Scientist, Office Services Manager, and now as the Business Development Associate, leading the capture and proposal development for our Alaska pursuits.
Q: What is your favorite part of the job?
A: My teammates are extremely talented, and I enjoy showcasing how great they are. I also love the creative aspect. I am fortunate to have creative control on my projects and I enjoy all of it!
Q: What has been your most meaningful project?
A: The next one. The next one will always be better than the last, and I always look forward to it!
Q: What are your challenges?
A: Managing my own time while also being conscientious of my team’s schedule. Creative drought is also another one. I can run out of ideas!
Q: What was a pivotal point in your career?
A: Deciding that doing proposals full time is a path for me. When I realized the impact I can create—ultimately improving the community and quality of life for Alaskans by helping my team win work—I didn’t want to only “help out” with proposals. I wanted to be great at it, so I made it a focus. I studied the business and learned as much as I could.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is about to enter the marketing or business development field?
A: We can get lost in the process but ultimately, the core of what we do is solve a problem. We need to remember it’s not about us, but instead how we can help the client.
Q: What’s on your bucket list?
A: Skydiving!
Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
A: Coffee! I have seven ways to make them at home AND still go to coffee shops!
Q: Why is SMPS important to you?
A: I’m looking forward to connecting with business development professionals and learn more about the industry.
