CPSM Certification
Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM)
The CPSM certification program enhances the professional standing of A/E/C marketers and business developers with their employers, their peers, and the public. It increases confidence and knowledge in strategic marketing and business development practices, leading to professional success for the Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) and his or her company.
Being a CPSM means that you have met a rigorous standard of experience and expertise in marketing professional services. For some, that equates to career advancement or increased compensation and benefits. For everyone, this personal investment enhances your opportunity for professional success.

The MARKENDIUM®, also known as the SMPS Body of Knowledge, is the comprehensive educational resource for the successful practice of marketing and business development in the A/E/C industry. The MARKENDIUM also further defines the Six Domains of Practice for the Society and professional services marketing. The SMPS Alaska Chapter has a copy of the MARKENDIUM available for loan. What Are the Six Domains of Practice?
SMPS is the only marketing association offering A/E/C professionals the network, knowledge, and training to build business. Working with the Professional Testing Corporation, SMPS analyzed the practice of professional services marketing to articulate and confirm the body of knowledge and skills most critical to competency. The resulting knowledge areas and skill sets are classified under the Six Domains of Practice for professional services marketing.
- DOMAIN 1: Marketing Research
- DOMAIN 2: Marketing Planning
- DOMAIN 3: Client and Business Development
- DOMAIN 4: Proposals
- DOMAIN 5: Promotional Activity
- DOMAIN 6: Management
Value of Being a CPSM
Working in an environment where education and credentials are so valued, it is important to gain the respect of the clients we serve every day. Attaining your CPSM will give you the opportunity to challenge your knowledge of professional services marketing and improve in areas you are not familiar with.

How to Become a CPSM
All candidates must pledge to abide by the CPSM Code of Ethics. To sit for the CPSM examination, a candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Possess a bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree plus four years of experience in marketing or business development for firms providing professional services, or
- Possess an associate’s degree plus six years work experience in marketing or business development for firms providing professional services, or
- Without a degree, have eight years of experience in marketing or business development for firms providing professional services
Recertification Information
All CPSMs must renew their certification every three years. To fulfill this requirement, you must earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by December 31, every third year after your official certification date. For example, if you were originally certified in 2019, you must be recertified by December 31, 2022, then again by December 31, 2025. Credits earned in one three-year certification cycle may not be carried forward to another three-year cycle. You can easily track credits earned online.
