Monica Bradbury, Marketing Manager | DOWL
In our member spotlight, Monica Bradbury, takes time out of her busy day to chat with SMPS.

Q: How did you find your way to the AEC industry and your current firm?
A: Like most professional services marketers I’ve met, I got here by accident. I worked in newspapers before I decided I wanted to make a change but still focus on writing and editing. That focus led me to an Alaska Native Corporation writing big federal proposals, and then a family member lured me to DOWL. Best decision ever!
Q: What was a pivotal point in your career?
A: Becoming a partner at DOWL was a big moment. I always felt like I had a seat at the table, but officially becoming part of something greater than myself and my career has made my job that much more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Q: What is your favorite part of the job or your most meaningful project?
A: I love the variety of my job. It’s a lot of proposal writing and reading, but with the services DOWL offers and our continued growth, there is always something new. I also get to help with other external and internal communications and company events (when we can have them). I manage staff across the company, so that is an aspect that requires a whole other set of skills. Every day is different!
Q: Why is SMPS important to you?
A: The most important part of SMPS to me is networking. Through the organization, I’ve been able to meet and build relationships with my counterparts across Alaska but also Outside. I’ve learned so much from other marketers in this industry, and sometimes it’s nice just to have people to commiserate with who understand and have the same struggles.
Q: What is on your bucket list?
A: I’m ready to travel again! Italy, Greece, and Spain are at the top of the list.
Q: How do you spend your time outside of work?
A: I love reading, dancing, and live music. I’m really looking forward to an Alaska summer of hiking, camping, and fishing, but I also enjoy just sitting in my backyard with my two daughters (and whatever other family or friends care to join us), a fire in the pit, and a glass of wine.
Q: What do you look forward to most in a post-COVID world?
A: I can’t wait to gather in person again. Especially with all my SMPS homies!
Q: Would you rather attend a sporting event, concert, or neither?
A: How about both? I don’t think I’ve ever been to a major sporting event (thanks, Alaska), but I loved watching my little brother play little league as a kid, and I miss the Aces, too! Live music is one of my favorite things in the world, though, and I hope to someday be in a stadium crowded with tens of thousands of people again.
