Ashley Ebnet | Anchorage Economic Development Corporation

In our member spotlight, Ashley Ebnet takes time out of her busy day to chat with SMPS. Ashley, who works for AEDC as their Director of Marketing and Development, shares the rewards of her job and the benefits of being an SMPS member

Q: How did you find your way to the AEC industry and your current firm?

A: I've always been passionate about marketing, event planning, and staying connected to our community and nonprofit efforts. During the pandemic I was working at a small marketing agency, when one of my clients referred me to this position at AEDC, and it’s been the best career move I've made so far.

Q: What is your favorite part of the job?

A: I love that no two days or weeks are the same. We get to engage with so many different groups and organizations. One day I might be having lunch with politicians, the next I'm planning the state's largest luncheon, and the day after that I’m having conversations with freshmen about their future career paths.

Q: What has been your most meaningful project?

A: I’ve accomplished a lot that I’m proud of, but the work that means the most to me is the time I spend volunteering. For over two years, I’ve volunteered with the Clothesline Project, helping with marketing, organizing drop-off logistics, securing sponsorships, and coordinating donations. It’s heartbreaking to see how great the need for basic necessities is for school-aged kids, and anything I can do to help give them a leg up makes all the difference to me.

Q: What are your challenges?

A: As a working mom of two in a fast-paced industry, one of my biggest challenges is finding the right work-life balance. It's not always easy, but I figure if I can manage this, I can handle anything!

Q: What was a pivotal point in your career?

A: I never planned on going to college. Early on, I was working at ACS and quickly capped out in my department, realizing sales wasn’t for me. My department worked closely with the marketing team, and I discovered that’s where my passion was, but I couldn’t apply for those roles without a college degree. I thought, "Well, that’s not going to stop me." After about six months of planning and with the encouragement of my stepfather—whom I’ll always be grateful for—I decided to quit and put myself through school. Before I even finished my degree, I was hired by a marketing agency in Anchorage. A couple of years later, I worked my way up to my dream job here at AEDC!

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is about to enter the marketing or business development field

A:  I’d recommend anyone getting into marketing or business development to really explore and research the niche they enjoy most. It’s such a broad field, and there’s so much you can do with it—marketing, PR, development, strategy, advising, events—the sky’s the limit! I originally thought I’d be more into graphic design and ad campaigns, but it turns out I enjoy the development and event planning side much more.

Q: What's on your bucket list

A: I’ve got quite a bit on my bucket list! Professionally, I want to keep learning and growing—maybe even go for my master’s degree. Personally, I’d love to explore the world with my kids before they’re off on their own. And, of course, I’d love to check off some trophy hunts with my husband!

Q: How do you spend your time outside of work?

A: My family and I love spending time outdoors—we enjoy traveling, hunting, and fishing. If I could live on a boat, I definitely would!

Q: Why is SMPS important to you?

A: I'm new to SMPS, but so far, the networking and events have been fantastic. I'm excited to get more involved this year and see what other opportunities it brings!

Q: Who inspires you?

A: This is always a great question, but I find it challenging to answer. Some days, I’m inspired by my daughter—watching her learn and grow into a young woman who handles significant life choices with maturity beyond her years. Other days, it’s a speaker or podcast whose message resonates with me and prompts deep reflection. I also draw inspiration from those who step up in moments of need, motivating me to do more and to be braver in uncomfortable situations. Additionally, leaders like my boss inspire me with their ability to navigate even the most challenging circumstances with grace.

Q: Guilty pleasure: What can you not live without?

A: Iced Coffee & Chocolate!
