Alaska Project Tour – Loussac Library

Get the inside scoop on the Loussac Library renovation! Join RIM Project Architect Monica Sullivan, AIA NCARB CDT for a tour of the library’s new and updated features.

Monica has been involved with the library renovation since day one, from the focus groups, master planning, and design. The library, opened in its currently location in 1986, contains Anchorage’s Assembly Chambers on the ground floor. Library floors above house patron services, book and media collections, youth and adult programming spaces, public computers and a community Innovation Lab, a cafe, and the Alaska Collection Wing. Take a look at Anchorage’s most famous library as it undergoes a dramatic change to complement our diverse community.  

Space is limited, so sign up early! 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Meet at the lobby inside of the Loussac Library new enterance on the ground floor.

Please bring a safety vest and hard hats if you have them. This will show that we are in a group and protect us from any construction at the time.

Learn More About Our Speakers:

Katherine has 15 years’ experience providing public involvement planning, communications strategy, management, and facilitation for infrastructure development projects in Alaska. Katherine’s expertise has resulted in increased public confidence and defensible processes. For Anchorage International Airport Master Plan Update, Katherine led a highly successful PI program that received the 2014 Public Outreach Award from the American Planning Association, Alaska Chapter and the Northwest American Association of Airport Executives 2016 Corporate Award of Excellence. She is a member of the IAP2, developed HDR’s best practice document for environmental justice and limited English proficiency (LEP) outreach techniques and presented on EJ/LEP at several national conferences. Recent clients include Alaska DOT&PF, AIDEA, AMATS and BlueCrest Energy.

Anne established Brooks & Associates in November 1993 to provide a variety of technical support to architectural and engineering firms doing business in Alaska. The firm’s current emphasis is on public participation — bringing the public’s voice to projects that will affect them. Anne has more than 17 years of experience working with stakeholders around the state, particularly on transportation projects including on the Parks Highway, Glenn Highway, and Seward Highway. Anne is adept at compiling documentation of public issues and translating technical documents and graphics for the lay public, and has successfully led public involvement on numerous controversial projects.

Van is a Certified Senior Level Planner and a Certified Public Involvement Specialist through the International Association for Public Participation. She is a former Municipal Planner with 14 years of experience in the public and private sectors and is experienced in effective and open communications for a diverse set of stakeholders in Alaska. Van has proven leadership for planning and executing public outreach campaigns and communicating project objectives, capital improvement funding and project milestones to residents, agencies, business stakeholders, community groups, municipal staff and elected officials. She specializes in land use compatibility, code analysis, community development, multi-modal transportation planning, regional planning and project management, as well as area-specific master plans. Van also specializes in Systematic Development of Informed Consent (SDIC) and Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) public outreach methods. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and actively serves on the AMATS Complete Streets Committee, ITE Alaska Section Active Transportation Committee and on the Board of the Alaska Chapter of WTS – Women in Transportation Seminar. Van holds a M.S. in Environmental Science from Alaska Pacific University and a B.A. in Urban Geography from the University of British Columbia.

Rachel is DOWL’s senior public involvement lead. She was born and raised in Anchorage and is well known in the skiing community with roles on the Kincaid Project Group and the Alaska Winter Olympians Foundation. Rachel has run public involvement for several high-profile DOWL projects, including the Glenn Highway/Muldoon Road Interchange and Northern Access to UMed. She is currently working on the Seward Highway: O’Malley Road to Dimond Boulevard and Midtown Congestion Relief projects.

We all know that presentations can be hectic and stressful. Planning is the key to taming the chaos. In this session you’ll learn presentation planning and coaching best practices.

November Luncheon: Infrastructure Panel

Alaska’s infrastructure requires constant maintenance and development. Come learn about how the Port of Anchorage, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are approaching infrastructure upkeep in Alaska. Panelists will discuss current projects, upcoming work and proposal best practices.

Sharen Walsh, PE, AMPE has served as the the Deputy Director for the Port of Anchorage since 2014. She oversees the operations, maintenance, and security functions of the Port’s day-to-day activities and also manages the as-needed engineering and construction contracts associated with repair and upkeep of the Port’s existing infrastructure. 

Sharen is a lifelong Alaskan. A registered civil engineer, she has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame. She has 39 years of experience in design engineering, construction management, and construction contracting in both the public and private sectors. From 2010 to 2014, she served concurrently as Anchorage’s Building Official and as Deputy Director of the Development Services Division for the Community Development Department. Her project experience includes: housing, water, and sewer work in rural Alaska; defense contracting projects on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson and on the Aleutian Islands of Adak and Shemya; and roads and drainage projects in the Municipality of Anchorage. She has served on the municipal Platting Board, the local boards of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Alaska Association of General Contractors, and the Imaginarium Science Learning Center. She recently completed a year of service on the board of Region II of the International Code Council and currently serves on the Anchorage School District Capital Improvement Advisory Committee.

John Johansen, PE, is the Manager of Engineering, Environmental and Planning at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport for the Alaska DOT &PF. He is responsible for the planning and delivery of about $50M in capital projects annually and ensuring the airport is in compliance with environmental regulations.

John is a licensed structural engineer and civil engineer in the States of Alaska and Washington. John was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. He received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1980 and he received a Masters of Civil Engineering (Structural) degree from Cornell University in 1985. John worked in Fairbanks with Stutzmann Engineering designing roads, buildings, water and sewer systems, and bridges. In 1989 he moved to Seattle and spent 12 years with KCM, Inc. as a senior structural engineer and project manager designing wastewater treatment facilities, docks, and industrial and commercial buildings. In 2001, John and his wife, Cheri, moved to Anchorage where he spent 4 years with Reid Middleton, Inc. as a senior structural engineer and project manager working on institutional, commercial, and office buildings. In 2005 he took his current position with the State. John is an Accredited Airport Executive of the American Association of Airport Executives
